stopping en route for a little sandwich a la Jac:
After a short stop at Capitol Reef, we continued on to Hanksville--a tiny, dusty, dumpy town that was to be our home for the night.
The town may have been a dump, but our little cabin at Duke's was pretty cute:
We checked in, unpacked, had a little snack of hummus and chips:
and then headed back out on the 'town' to explore the very sad, very dumpy, very interesting Hanksville. Here's a typical scene, eek:
We did find one very interesting stop -- the 100+ year old, still-intact Wolverton Mill:
We wandered around inside, and Jac explained how the various parts of the mill worked...and I actually understood it. 😁
It was actually a pretty small mill, but very authentic and fun to explore:
After our wanderings, we headed back to the cabin for a dinner of leftovers and then a little tv before bed:
The next day, we did a little off-roading (unintentional but fun) in the vicinity of "Factory Butte" (in the background):
Then headed for Little Whitehorse Canyon to experience a classic slot canyon hike. We did have a little situation en route, but we didn't let it stop us, no-sir-ree. :) Here are some shots of our hike:

Next, we visited Goblin Valley State Park. (We had to wait in line for awhile to get in, but 'we didn't regret it'.) In the park, we checked out all the cute little goblins from the overlook:

For perspective on how big the 'goblins' actually are, check out the people in the lefthand side of this picture:
We took in the view for awhile, had a little lunch (salmon sandwiches a la Jac),
and then decided we were too tired from the Little Whitehorse Canyon hike to go hike amongst the goblins, so...it was time to head home.
And that's it. That was the whole trip. Short, but sweet. It was exactly what we needed... just to get away for a night, have a little adventure, and remember once again how GREAT it is to be in our little home again!
