Finishing the Garden Troughs
It was certainly a lot of work, but we finished the garden troughs. It took several long days in the garden, with many, many steps involved! But it's gonna be great. We just know it.
Here's the entire process, which I am documenting here for when it's such a wild success that we want to make more of them elsewhere in the yard. :)
- First we covered the area with cardboard and plastic (to kill the grass), then constructed a large rectangle out of wood and filled it with rock gravel. This was done to create an even surface since that part of the yard is very uneven. [See March entry].
- We then bought six big cattle watering troughs from Tractor Supply Store, set them where we wanted them, and drilled drainage holes in each one. [See March entry].
- Next, we filled the bottom half of the troughs with rock gravel and two wicks (two small black things) that will help transport water up to the plants, plus a big tube (tall black thing) in which we will periodically replenish the water supply in the bottom half of the trough.
- We then covered it all with two layers of landscape fabric:
- Lastly, we filled it with our special soil mixture (wheelbarrow full after wheelbarrow full!)
All told, it took four full weekend days to get these babies ready, but that they are -- ready to grow, grow, grow!
Seed Starting!
It's a good thing the troughs are ready because I also spent April starting a ton of seeds. Here's just some of them:
